ON DEVELOPMENT STAGE / UX DESIGN

iOS App Development

When a client approached my partner and me about a project to help people break the cycle of negative thinking, we were immediately intrigued.

As we dove into the research, we learned some startling statistics - 80% of the average person's 12,000-60,000 thoughts per day are negative, and 95% are repetitive. No wonder so many people struggle with negative self-talk and thought patterns that can harm our mental and physical health.

Through user interviews, we found that positive affirmations and self-talk can be an effective way to combat negative thinking. However, developing this habit is challenging for many people, which is where our app comes in. Our goal is to create an easy-to-use, reliable tool that helps users retrain their brains to focus on the positive.

By promoting positive self-talk, our app can help users manage stress more effectively, lead healthier lifestyles, and cultivate more positive mindsets overall.

User Persona & Journey Map

  • Meet our Persona, Kristin Watson

Kristin is a recent business school graduate and newly promoted Corporate Recruiter living in California. Despite her professional success, Kristin often finds herself struggling with low self-esteem and self-efficacy due to negative coworkers. In her free time, she enjoys hanging out with friends, but still feels uncertain about how to prioritize her mental well-being. While Kristin knows that positive self-talk is important, she admits it's easy to focus on the negatives and feel overwhelmed by triggers.

Negative self-talk and negative thinking are detrimental to health, resulting in mental and physical problems. While positive self-talk may begin with good intentions, it is difficult to stick with it. How might we develop habits and behaviors that stick around past motivation?

Based on our research, we've determined that the app needs to meet the following criteria:

  • It must be user-friendly and easy to use to encourage users to stick with it

  • It should be simple and not feel like a burden or hassle to use

  • The app should offer small, achievable actions that can lead to significant positive changes over time.

Main User Flow

  • Using these three criteria, I devised a straightforward user flow. Although the app's development led to a more intricate overall flow chart, the primary flow has stayed as uncomplicated as possible.

In our mission to create an app that was truly engaging and enjoyable for our users, we implemented a range of exciting features designed to enhance the user experience. Among these features was a Library of all the note collections that users have written in the past, providing an easy and intuitive way for users to access their old notes and reflect on their personal growth and progress over time. Furthermore, we integrated helpful statistics, Happiness Count, to show progress and growth over time, allowing users to track their journey towards greater positivity and well-being. To further support users on their journey, we also included a Mood Booster feature to lift users' spirits and keep them engaged with the app.

With the addition of these innovative and creative tools, we aimed to create an app that was not only effective in helping users achieve their goals, but also engaging, enjoyable, and ultimately rewarding for our users.

During usability tests, our team encountered a significant challenge when we received a 50-50 split in feedback from users. This made it difficult to know which direction to take the design.

After much deliberation, we decided to go back to our initial concept, which had generated excitement among the team. We knew we had to create something simple, easy to use, and accessible to a broad user base. We listened carefully to the pain points raised by users and focused on addressing them, resulting in a more inclusive app.

Usability Rating

Our users were requested to provide a rating on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 indicating the most challenging and 10 indicating the easiest experience. In the LoFi stage, the average rating was 8.6 out of 10. As the HiFi stage concluded, the rating improved to 9.26 out of 10, which is a 16.3% increase.
