ONGOING PROJECT / UX DESIGN

Website Design

The Hollywood Dodgers(HD for shorten), a beloved part of the CYC organization, offers youth basketball programs to serve the Asian-American community in Southern California. Their mission is to promote friendly competitions, sportsmanship, parent involvement, and cultural heritage.

My first focus was the Hollywood Dodgers Las Vegas Invitational Tournament user flow as stakeholders wanted to soft launch the registration of the event in March 2023. When I asked the stakeholders what they wanted the most in the website, they said they wanted it to lead the scene.

However, after conducting competitive analysis, I learned that HD’s website is not only outdated but also it leaves the users feeling disconnected. As some users mentioned in initial survey that users desired a place to connect, communicate, and hang out, I took on the challenge of creating a new website.

To address this issue, a pressing need arose for a new website that could act as a community hub for the Hollywood Dodgers and its members to share stories and messages.

Pain Points

  • From Users

I analyzed over 75+ surveys and filtered usability issues related to the website. Based on the survey, the main pain point was difficulty in communication between users and the organization.

  • From Stakeholders

Based on the interviews and survey responses, stakeholders also had their own usability issues related to the website.

  • In the old website,

At first, I thought the website was too basic and didn't have much useful information. But as I kept working on the project, I discovered some information that was not easy to find and needed a direct link to access. Even though this information was available to the public, it was not easy to locate unless you knew where to look for it.

  • In the updated website,

My main focus was to extract all the scattered pieces of information from their hidden pockets and incorporate them into the website's sitemap, enabling users to easily locate any information they need. Initially, the sitemap was limited, but as the project progressed, it expanded substantially. As the project is still ongoing, I anticipate the sitemap to continue growing in the future.

Through conducting a survey from current users, heuristic evaluation of the current website and multiple fidelities with Maze Usability tests, I created wireframes for initial design language with a updated UI style board in Figma. Then, I transferred the designed at our Hi-Fi Stage of development.

I discovered that the original website was very difficult to find information from due to too much information scattered about. I consolidated multiple information sheet into one for easier access to information that users need.

I also used an accordion to disclose information progressively so that the user is not overwhelmed with text.

Due to the Las Vegas Invitational Tournament, stakeholders wanted to open the website as soon as possible. As a designer, I was a bit worried about usability issues, but also wanted to honor what stakeholders wanted. So I soft-launched the website on March 15th, 2023 and included the Google Survey to ask current users about their experience. As part of the survey, I asked users to provide their contact information if they were interested in participating in future usability tests.

Following the soft-launch, I am presently focusing on enhancing other areas of the website. Once I gather additional data from the soft-launch, I look forward to making updates to the website accordingly.
